Education & Public Learning

Pillar I | Educational Innovation
Reclaiming education through heritage, meaning, and place.

Builders of the Desert reimagines education as a tool for self-discovery, community connection, and cultural stewardship. By anchoring learning in the landscapes and legacies of the Borderlands, we empower students and educators to see themselves as part of a living story—one they have the power to shape.

“When students learn where they come from, they remember who they are, and realize who they can become.”

Core Programs

Borderlands Curriculum Initiative

A standards-aligned curriculum rooted in place, culture, and identity.

Our flagship TEKS-aligned, multi-grade curriculum fuses local history, cultural literacy, and civic engagement. Designed for classroom use across disciplines, it brings El Paso’s legacy into every subject—from social studies to science, art, and beyond.

Youth Civic Historians Program

Training tomorrow’s historians in today’s neighborhoods.

Students become active researchers, archivists, and storytellers. Through oral histories, photo documentation, and guided fieldwork, they preserve the stories of elders, neighborhoods, and businesses that shaped El Paso.

Educator Training & Support

Empowering teachers to teach with heritage and heart.

We provide free professional development tailored to your classroom needs; aligned with SPED, ELPS, and 504 compliance. Learn how to embed place-based learning, civic dialogue, and culturally responsive tools into your curriculum.

Walking Tours as Fieldwork

Where the city becomes the classroom.

Students explore historic neighborhoods through immersive walking tours guided by trained facilitators. Each tour includes worksheets, archival material, and pre/post classroom activities tied to civic engagement and storytelling.

Creative Civic Campaigns

Youth voices tackling real-world issues through storytelling.

A project-based learning experience where students design media, posters, podcasts, and videos to address civic themes like housing, public health, voting, and justice. Final campaigns are exhibited publicly to drive conversation and impact.

Culture Keepers Fellowship

A student fellowship for heritage stewardship.

Selected high school or college students become “Culture Keepers,” assisting with archive digitization, community interviews, tour guiding, and curriculum testing. Fellows receive stipends, training, and resume-building mentorship.

The Borderlands Debate & Civic Forum

Youth-led debates grounded in local history and real-world issues.

A civic engagement program that trains students to research, debate, and present public arguments on topics like housing, environmental justice, migration, and cultural preservation — all anchored in the Borderlands context.

The Ancestry & Identity Project

Tracing our roots to understand who we are and where we’re going.

A public-facing initiative inviting families, community members, and students to explore their personal, familial, and cultural histories. Participants contribute to a living archive that celebrates the richness of borderland identities.

Specialized workshops for students are guided by educators and local historians, where youth learn how to trace family trees, conduct oral histories, document community stories, and creatively present their heritage through writing, visual art, or media.

Preserving the past while building identity and pride for the future.

The Borderlands Teacher Collaborative

A regional network of educators co-creating place-based learning.

Monthly roundtables, resource shares, and professional development events connecting El Paso-area teachers passionate about culturally relevant pedagogy. Teachers can co-author new curriculum units and pilot programs in their schools.

Custom Curriculum Requests

History, tailored to your school or classroom.

Need a module on your school’s neighborhood, or a unit on a specific time period? We co-create custom curriculum kits for educators; complete with lesson plans, maps, primary sources, and standards alignment.
